MALINDI

Malindi is a stunning coastal town known for its breathtaking beaches, where golden sands meet the sparkling Indian Ocean. Rich in history, Malindi boasts a unique blend of Portuguese and Arabic influences that can be seen in its architecture and culture making it the perfect spot for both relaxation and exploration. Whether you're soaking up the sun or wandering through its historic sites, Malindi promises an unforgettable experience.

Day 1: Arrival and Beach Bliss

  • Morning: Arrive at Malindi Airport and feel the warm coastal breeze welcome you. Our driver and lead guide will drive you to your seaside resort, BILLIONAIRE RESORT AND RETREAT in Malindi. You will get to relax and refresh when you slowly get to acclimatise to your new surroundings.

  • Afternoon: Head straight to the Beach for relaxation, we call it "barefoot luxury" and engage in building sandcastles or test your photography skills with Instagram-worthy shots of the stunning shoreline.

  • Evening: After enjoying a sunset dhow ride, you will enjoy dinner prepared by the diligent chefs. Try the octopus curry—your taste buds will thank you.

Day 2: History and CulturE

  • Morning: At 8 am you will be picked up in a special motorbike locally known as "Tuk-Tuk" (quite popular in India) for a visit to The EAST AFRICAN REPTILES, to see the residents reptiles and be educated on the role that horses play in the development of snakes anti-venom and also watch a "Milking" demonstration which involves on eof the large resident snake species having some venom extracted! Afterwards, we will depart for the nearby for the  nearby Gedi Ruins, an abandoned Swahili town steeped in mystery. With the tour being managed by our Coastal region Head Guide Ainsworth, be prepared to be wowed by the history of this small quiet city that was founded in the 11th century and deserted in the 16th century. You will also spot a monkey or two pretending to be your guide and if lucky, get to feed them some peanuts while standing on your shoulder! 

  • Afternoon: After lunch, you will visit the Vasco da Gama Pillar, one of Africa's oldest European monuments built by the Portuguese who were the rulers of Malindi in the 15th century. Later, we will drop by the Malindi Museum to delve deeper into the town’s rich history whereby you will get to learn why there's so much Arabic and Portuguese inspired architecture in the area. 

  • Evening: Your guide will pick you up from the hotel where you will get to unwind with a dhow cruise watching the sun set from a distance on the Indian Ocean, complete with snacks and soft drinks. Enjoy the breathtaking sunset as your captain shares the history of local legends.

Fun Tip: Try to spot a dolphin on your cruise. If they don’t show up, it’s probably because they’re shy, not because of your singing!

Day 3: Marine Adventure Day

  • Morning: At 9 am our guide will come pick you up for a Marine Park Tour at The Malindi Marine Park where you will have the opportunity to snorkell or dive for a swim into the stunning Indian Ocean where you will swim among colorful coral reefs, exotic fish, and maybe even a sea turtle.

  • Afternoon: After taking lunch at the resort, you will have the chance to take a short siesta till 3:30 pm when our guide will pick you up for a Sundowner experience at "Hell's Kitchen", named so because temperatures can spike as high as 40 degrees Celsius during the day (hence the reason why we are going in the evening) where you will get to enjoy a Sundowner with some cold drinks and some local snacks like Samosas and Mishkakis (meat and veggies barbecued over low heat on skewers) while enjoying the company of your partner, friends or family).

  • Evening: After dinner you are free to relax pool side while watching the magical skyline littered with stars in this beautiful tropical destination asking yourself why you hadn't booked your trip earlier and wishing to relive this day again! 

Pro Tip: Those fish you saw earlier might be on your plate now—circle of life!

Day 4: VISIT TO WATAMU!

  • Morning: At 9am our driver and lead guide will be on hand to take you on a day trip to EAST AFRICAN REPTILES in Watamu where you will get to see the reptiles on display and see some of the most venomous snakes and also get to watch a venom extraction exercise. Afterwards we will depart for the nearby "Gedi Ruins", the remains of an ancient city founded in the 11th century and abandoned in the 16th century with probable causes being lack of water, a plague or war (Our guide will give you all the details in troves) and you will be astounded by how much history we miss out on.

  • Afternoon: You will be driven to Papa Remo Beach where you will take lunch while marvelling at the clean beautiful beach. Afterwards you will get to stroll the beach and even take a swim in the Indian Ocean. At 4 pm you will be driven to the nearby "Lichthaus Bar", a popular local beach bar for a Sundowner over some drinks, convo and music alongside other travellers.

  • Evening: You will get to have dinner and relax from the day's activities.

Day 5: Chill and Shop

  • Morning: On this day it's all about taking things slow. You can enjoy a relaxing stroll on the beach  or even a swim or opt for a spa treatment at your resort to recharge.

  • Afternoon: You can have a visit to the local markets for last-minute souvenirs—think kikois (Kikois are traditional rectangular woven cloth originating from Africa which can be used as a scarf, sarong, skirt, baby sling, towel, shawl, head wrap, dress) beaded jewelry, and Makonde carvings for friends and family back home.

  • Evening: Wrap up your trip with an amazing buffet dinner trying out the fresh local cuisine before calling it a night.

Final Thought: If you don’t leave Malindi with a suitcase full of kikois and a heart full of memories, did you even visit?
