LAMU

Lamu, a serene UNESCO World Heritage Site, enchants with its timeless Swahili architecture, sandy shores, dhow cruises, and rich history.

Day 1: Welcome to the Enchanted Island

Morning

  • Upon arrival in Lamu, you will be met by our guide who will check you into the charming Peponi Hotel where you will freshen up and relax over a cold welcoming drink as you get to adjust to the beautiful new surroundings.

  • After taking your lunch our guide will take you on a leisurely walking tour of Lamu Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, admiring the intricately carved wooden doors, coral stone buildings, and narrow streets. One thing that stands out regarding Lamu is that there are no cars (courtesy of the narrow alley ways) and donkeys, other than walking, are the main source of transport while on the Island.

  • A visit to Lamu Museum is slated for the morning to dive into the island’s rich Swahili culture and maritime history delving into how trade and interaction with different nationalities have impacted on Lamu with regards to the culture, religion and lifestyle of the locals up to this day.

Afternoon

  • After the morning activities you will get to savor a traditional Swahili lunch at Peponi Hotel to enjoy some fresh seafood, coconut rice, and samosas.

  • Led by your guide, you will hop onto a dhow for a serene afternoon cruise along the coastline whereby you will get the opportunity to swim in the turquoise waters or relax on board while enjoying some snacks and cold drinks onboard.

Evening

  • Enjoy delicious dinner.

Day 2: Culture and Coastal Adventures

Morning

  • Visit the iconic Riyadha Mosque (built in 1892), a centerpiece of Lamu’s spiritual life, and learn about its history.

  • Led by our guide, you will be taken to the Takwa Ruins on Manda Island (said to have been founded in 1500 and abandoned by 1800 for unknown reasons) to explore the remnants of this ancient Swahili settlement and hear fascinating stories about its rise and fall from our guide.

Afternoon

  • Head back to the resort where you will get to relax and take lunch then you will embark on a sunset kayaking or stand-up paddle-boarding adventure, exploring the mangroves and creeks.

Evening

  • After dinner you can unwind with some traditional Swahili tea, tasting sweet chai and indulging in coconut-infused Swahili desserts.

Day 3: Relaxation and Local Connections

Morning

  • Morning visit to Siyu Fort, said to have been founded in the 13th century where famous Chinese explorer ZHENG HE's fleet is said to have sunk in the area in 1415 and the remaining survivors settled on Pate Island and later remarried and recent DNA findings confirm that some of the residents indeed have Chinese origin.

  • Afterwards we will explore Shela Village, browsing through artisan shops for handcrafted jewelry, kikois, and locally made perfumes that you will get to take home as souvenirs.

Afternoon​

  • Relax on the pristine Manda Bay, with options to swim, sunbathe, or read under a swaying palm tree.

Evening

  • End your trip with a Swahili-style feast served on a dhow under the stars, complete with live taarab music and reflect on the beauty and tranquility of Lamu.
